Baby Development – 4 months

By 16 weeks old your baby will probably be able to…

 

Physical Development

  • Actively kicks his legs
  • Wave his arms about
  • Move his head to follow movement
  • Watch his hands
  • Use his fingers to play

 

Sensory Development

  • Move his head to look around
  • Focus his eyes
  • Following with his eyes
  • Respond to smell
  • Respond to touch

 

Cognitive Development

  • Recognise and respond to you
  • Coo and smile

 

Language and Communication

  • Imitate noises and facial expressions
  • Make cooing and gurgling noises
  • Laugh
  • Use noise to ask for company
  • Be comforted by familiar voices
  • Turn his head towards familiar voices

 

Emotional and Social Development

  • Show enjoyment and pleasure with activities
  • Stay awake for longer periods
  • Be soothed and settled by your voice

 

Baby Development 4 months: developmental leaps

Each leap brings changes in behaviour, awareness, mood and sleep and your baby may seem unsettled and clingy.

  • 4-6 weeks – his eye sight is developing

  • 7-10 weeks – starts to recognise simple routines, making new noises and discovering part of his body

  • 11-13 weeks – he will be more active, squirmy and responsive and his senses are developing
